Fiery Legacies: Mozart's 40th & Beethoven's 5th
Presented by The Mozart Higday Trust
Saturday, June 27th 2026 | 7:00pm | Missouri Theatre, Columbia MO
This concert traces a lineage of intensity and transformation that begins with Mozart. After his Symphony No. 40, no composer could escape its turbulent minor-key world — a work of startling emotional urgency whose shadows stretch far beyond the Classical era. Its restless energy projects powerfully into the next generation, perhaps most famously in Beethoven.
Between these two monumental symphonies, we hear Joseph Bologne’s Symphonie Concertantes, performed by hometown sisters Solveig and Linnea Geenen. A composer admired across Europe in Mozart’s time, Bologne shared the same elegance, brilliance, and dramatic flair that defined the late eighteenth century at its most daring. The program culminates with Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony — a work that transforms Mozart’s expressive inheritance into a new, defiant voice, forging a legacy that would shape the future of music.
This concert is made possible by the support of the Higday Mozart Trust.
